Sculptures of Helsinki #2 and #3

Sculptures of Helsinki
Ateneum Museum, Helsinki

On the HAM sculpture database Ateneum is listed twice. Firstly. for the heads of three great masters of art, Bramante, Phidias and Raphael above the entrance, Then the other is for the facade itself, and in particularly, the four female figures supporting the roof.  Interestingly, the building was designed by architect Theodor Höijer but the facade was decorated by sculptures Ville Vallgren and Magnus von Wright. The inscription on the front of the building reads “Concordia res parvae crescunt” meaning small things grow in harmony. Ateneum was completed in 1887.

You can find almost 500 outdoor sculptures, pieces of environmental art and historical monuments in Helsinki and they are accessible to everyone. See more and search through the database at HAMhelsinki.fi
